Fronius Inverters: Primo and Symo Product Lines

Published: 2 August 2021

Fronius inverters are designed to maximise self-consumption in homes with solar panels, and reduce the amount of electricity that gets exported to the grid.

Fronius is a leading inverter brand internationally, with 76 years of experience and more than 1,200 patents. The company was founded in Austria in 1945, and they have now expanded to five continents, with over 5,000 employees and a partner network of over 5,800 installers. So far, Fronius has installed more than 5,000 MW of inverter capacity around the world.

The name Fronius is associated with high-quality inverters, but the company focuses on energy monitoring and control solutions in general. In the solar industry, Fronius offers inverters that range from 1.5 to 27.0 kW of capacity, covered by a warranty of up to 20 years. The company also provides solutions for battery charging and welding applications.

Fronius inverters are designed to maximise self-consumption in homes with solar panels, and reduce the amount of electricity that gets exported to the grid. Electricity prices in Australia often exceed 30 cents/kWh, but many homeowners are paid less than 10 cents/kWh when exporting surplus solar power to the grid. Solar electricity that gets consumed at home is more valuable in terms of power bill savings.

Overview of the Primo and Symo Inverters from Fronius

Fronius offers traditional string inverters for users who only plan to install solar panels, and hybrid inverters for installations that include battery systems. At Instyle Solar, we work with the Primo and Symo product lines from Fronius, which cover projects from 3 to 20 kW:

Product LineInverter TypeCapacity Range (kW)Efficiency (%)
Fronius PrimoString inverter3.0-8.2 kW, single-phaseUp to 98.1%
Fronius SymoString inverter3.0-20.0 kW, three-phaseUp to 98.1%
Fronius Symo HybridHybrid inverter3.0-5.0 kW, three-phaseUp to 97.9%
Fronius Primo GEN24 PlusHybrid inverter3.0-6.0 kW, single-phaseUp to 97.6%
Fronius Symo GEN24 PlusHybrid inverter3.0-10.0 kW, three-phaseUp to 98.2%

The Primo GEN24 Plus and Symo GEN24 Plus inverters have an enhanced cooling system with a built-in fan, which improves their performance and service life. They also have a design that simplifies part replacements, which reduces maintenance costs over time.

Fronius inverters include smart energy management functions, and they have WLAN and Ethernet connectivity. In addition, the brand is compatible with many home automation systems and other third-party components. In particular, hybrid inverters from Fronius have the Multi-Flow Technology, which means they can handle energy flows in many directions at once. For example, they can provide electricity for home devices and charge batteries simultaneously.

Users also have access to the Fronius Solar.web platform, where they can check the performance of solar systems in real time. The app can compare solar generation with home consumption, and owners can adjust their habits to use more energy from solar panels and less from the grid.

HTW Berlin Energy Storage Inspection 2021: Fronius Inverters among the most efficient

Each year, the Berlin University of Applied Sciences (HTW Berlin) conducts its Energy Storage Inspection, considering two scenarios:

  • A 10-kW solar PV system powering a home that consumes 5,010 kWh per year, which includes a heat pump and electric vehicle charger.
  • A 5-kW solar PV system powering a home with the same consumption.

The Fronius Symo GEN24 Plus inverter was the most efficient in the 10kW category, with a System Performance Index of 94%, and the 2nd most efficient in the 5kW category, with an SPI of 92.3% (only 0.3% below the 1st place). In both cases, the inverter was combined with a high-voltage battery system from BYD.

The SPI is a metric that considers performance factors like energy conversion losses, energy management, and standby mode. The Multi Flow Technology used by Fronius inverters was a key factor that contributed to a high SPI in the HTW Berlin Energy Storage Inspection.
